Viral Marketing with Ease

You’ve probably heard the term viral marketing multiple times. Did you know what it meant? Viral marketing is essentially encouraging others to pass along your marketing message. With viral marketing, one person may tell two or three others about the offer and those people will each tell two or three people, and from there it just grows and grows. Viral marketing uses many different modes of transportation as well, such as ebooks, videos, articles, images, and even games, blogs.

So, how can you break into viral marketing? First, understand it. Viral marketing has been around since about 1996, when Jeffrey Rayport first used the term. He was a Harvard Business School professor. The first example of viral marketing on the Internet was Hotmail – they gave away email service for free, and put advertising messages in each email that was sent out from this free email account. As you can see from this example, the idea is to get your message out to as many people as possible, with very little effort on your part.

Today, social networking on the Internet makes viral marketing extremely easy. You simply find a few people who have what is known as an SNP or high social networking potential. Think for just a minute about all of those cute poems and such that are forwarded en-mass to everyone in someone’s address book. While this is annoying to many people, there are those who really enjoy this process of passing things along.

How can you do this without appearing to be a spammer? Easy, get in on the ‘forward this along to everyone you know’ revolution. When you receive one of these email messages, add your own marketing message to the bottom of it – or even the top, and forward it along to everyone in your address book. Just make sure that you are not forwarding it to anyone who has asked that you not forward things of this nature.

Take advantage of the social networking sites, such as MySpace.com, in the form of video. You can simply create a video of interest to your target audience, and post it on your MySpace page. Hopefully, you’ve gone through the process of creating a large friends list. You can then broadcast that video to everyone on your friends list.

You can also take that video and place it on a site such as YouTube.com, tag it with your keywords, and let people’s interests lead the way. Make sure that you let it be known that others can use the video on their websites, as long as they don’t change it. Again, it must hold interest to your target market, or it won’t be successful.

Just by doing these three simple things, you will find out what the power of viral marketing is really all about, and just how easy it has become.
